Choosing good hangman words
Keep the word selection fair. The best hangman words are commonly known by all players involved and in the range of 6-8 letters long. Within this criteria, you can still come up with some really hard words.
- Favor words with usual letters
Players won't typically guess "j" or "z" so a word like "jazz" is very difficult to guess. - Favor words with repeating letters
In a word like "fluff", if players don't guess "f" the guesser is not left with a very good chance to figure out the word. - Avoid words with prominent vowel usage
Players like to guess vowels because they're occur much more frequent in words than consonants. After guessing all the vowels, its not too tough to figure out the word "again". Whereas "Rhythm" has a lot of unusual letters and has only "y" as its vowel. The guesser has likely incorrectly guessed 5 vowels before "y". - Avoid words with many different letters
Players often incorrectly think long complicated words are tough to guess but all those letters decrease the guessers chance of picking a wrong letter. Using the word "conceptualize", there are 11 letters a player can guess without getting a strike against them. Each letter guessed keeps the game alive and gets them closer to figuring out the word.
